Overview
This 3 day training course, delivered by PHECC registered instructors, is aimed at persons appointed to act as First Aid Responders under the First Aid at Work Regulations 2007.
Course Aim:
To enable the delegates to become competent and confident First Aiders, and have a full understanding of the principles of first aid in a wide range of disciplines as laid down by the prehospital emergency care council and current Health & Safety standards.
Courses Objectives:
To provide the First Aid Responder with the necessary skills and knowledge to administer and coordinate effective first aid, to deal with emergencies, to assess and treat injuries and to maintain care and comfort of the adult, child or infant casualty until medical treatment can be provided in compliance with current legislation.
Course Programme:
Day 1
Patient Assessment, Incident Procedure, Cardiac First Response.
Day 2
Common Medical Emergencies, Injury Management, Care of the unconscious patient.
Skills Practice & Assessment.
Day 3
Burns & Electrical Injury, Hypothermia & Hyperthermia,
Information Management, Communications
Wellbeing of the First Aid Responder
Test & Assessment of outstanding skills
Who Should Attend?
Persons selected or appointed as First Aid Responders with no previous experience or expired certification.
Assessment & Certification
A Theory Assessment together with Skills Assessments in accordance with PHECC standards will be carried out by participants.
On successful completion of the course a PHECC FAR Certificate will be issued. Recertification is required every 2 years.
Course times
Day 1 & 2: 9.30am – 4.30pm
Day 3: 9.30am – 12.30pm.
This 2 day (9:30am – 4:30pm) First Aid Refresher (FAR) Course is designed to ensure that existing PHECC First Aiders maintain their skills. For anyone who’s certificate is about to expire or has expired within the last 90 days.

The recommended number of participants per course is 10.

To provide participants with the information, instruction and training to enable them to competently and safely carry out effective techniques used in safe moving and handling of people in a variety of settings.

- Basic Principles of lifting
- Sitting a Patient up in bed
- Turning a Patient in bed using slide sheets

- Sitting a patient to the edge of a bed and standing
- Transferring patient from bed to chair
- The falling Patient
- Correct use of Hoist/Slings including use of SARA STEDY Hoist
- Use of Transfer Board
Assessment & Certification
Participants will be evaluated on their patient moving & handling techniques, competency must be demonstrated in all movements along with a multiple-choice questionnaire. On successful completion the candidate will receive a Demack Safety Certificate which is valid for 2 years.
This course contains elements of Classroom based practical work. Participants should wear loose, comfortable clothing as well as closed flat shoes or runners.
